Eating History

<p.125>

Our Favorite Ingredient

All the candy, ice cream, chocolate and coffee we enjoy would not be the same without sugar. This one ingredient, once known as “white gold,” certainly makes our lives a little sweeter. However, how much do you know about sugar’s long and interesting history? The people of New Guinea were probably the first to eat sugar around 8,000 BC. Later, sugar was brought to India, where people found out how to make it into the small, hard pieces we enjoy today. Arabs eventually used the sugar production methods they learned in India and set up the first big sugar farms and factories. They were also the first to introduce sugar to Europe, where it quickly became popular among the rich. In the 17th century, Europeans set up many large sugar farms in their American colonies, and the price of sugar went down slowly as it became more common. This meant it could be enjoyed by all levels of society. Today, there is sugar in almost everything we eat.

<p.126>

The next time you eat one of these common foods, think about the long history it had before ending up on your plate. Consider how far it has traveled and how many people have eaten this food before you. If you’re eating with friends or family, share what you’ve learned with them. It’ll make your meal a lot more interesting!

▷ [makes our lives a little sweeter], 동사 make가 5형식으로 사용된 구문이다. 위에서는 [make<동사>+our lives<목적어>+a little sweeter<목적격보어>]의 순으로 들어가며, 조금 더 세부적으로 [a little]이 부사로써 [sweeter]를 수식하는 관계이다.

4. However,/ how much do you know/ about sugar’s long and interesting history?

▷ [how to V] = [how+<주어>+should+V] = [how people should make it into the small, hard pieces]

▷ [The next time you eat one of these common foods] = [The next time when you eat one of these common foods], 관계부사 when이 사용된 구문이다.
▷ [before ending up on your plate], 여기에서 before가 전치사냐 접속사냐는 논외로 하고 이 구가 어떤 역할을 하는지를 확인해야 한다. before로 시작하는 것은 부사의 역할을 하며, 위의 구문에서 해당 부사가 수식할 수 있는 부분은 eat, think, had의 세 동작들이다.
