Section2 : Reading and Analyzing

IT (written by Stephen King) p.384

<-p1->

1. That was a busy morning for Beverly.

▶ Beverly

2. She got her father his breakfast – orange juice, scrambled eggs, Al Marsh’s version of toast (the bread hot but not really toasted at all).

▷ got her father his breakfast “그녀의 아버지에게 그의 아침을 주었다”의 의미.

3. He sat at the table, barricaded behind the News, and ate it all.

▷ He {① sat at the table, ② barricaded behind the News, and ③ ate it all.} 동사만 세 개가 덩그러니 나와 헷갈리거나 과거분사라고 판단할 수도 있겠으나, 의미상, 그리고 형태상 그(He)가 번호가 달려있는 세 개의 동작을 행한 것이라고 보아야 맞다.

4. “Where’s the bacon?”

5. “Gone, Daddy. We finished it yesterday.”

6. “Cook me a hamburger.”

7. “There’s only a little bit of that left, t-”

8. The paper rustled, then dropped. His blue stare fell on her like weight.

따라서 위의 문장에서 [the paper is rustled, then (is) dropped] 가 아니라 능동태인 [the paper rustled, then dropped] 라고 쓴 것이다

9. “What did you say?” he asked softly.

10. “I said right away, Daddy.”

11. He looked at her a moment longer. Then the paper went back up and Beverly hurried to the refrigerator to get the meat.

▷ [to get the meat] 부사적용법의 to부정사가 사용되었다.

<-p2->

12. She cooked him a hamburger, mashing the little bit of ground meat that was left in the icebox as hard as she could to make it look bigger.

▷ She cooked him a hamburger, [mashing the {little bit of ground} meat {that was left in the icebox} {as hard as she could} to make it look bigger.]

▷ 위에 나누어 놓은 문장의 구성은 [mashing the meat to make it look bigger] 에다가 meat을 조금 더 설명하기 위해 [little bit of ground]를 넣고, [the little bit of ground meat]을 수식하는 주격관계대명사절 [that was left in the icebox]를 추가했으며, mashing이라는 동작을 부연설명하는 [as hard as she could]가 추가되고, [mashing the meat]에 부사적용법의 to부정사를 사용하여 [to make it look bigger]를 추가한 것으로 보면 된다. [She cooked him a hamburger, mashing the meat to make it look bigger] 에 전부 포함된다

13. He ate it reading the Sports page and Beverly made his lunch – a couple of peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches, a big piece of cake her mother had brought back from Green’s Farm last night, a Thermos(보온병) of hot coffee heavily laced(풍미를 더한) with sugar.

▷ He ate it and Beverly made his lunch – a couple of peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches, a big piece of cake, a Thermos of hot coffee.
