Hana : So, what should we do next?

Mr.Reed : The next step is visualization: the process of creating vivid mental pictures of what you want. When you imagine something very specifically, the brain believes it is real and prepares to accomplish it.

Hana : Is this technique commonly used?

Mr.Reed : Well, it is being used more and more in competitive sports. For example, the well-known golfer Jack Nicklaus said that he never took a shot without first picturing it in his mind.

Hana : How can we put visualization to work for us?

Mr.Reed : Begin by imagining exactly what you want. For example, if you are nervous about public speaking and you have a class presentation coming up, imagine yourself standing in front of the class, doing very well. As you prepare your contents, in your mind’s eye, picture how you will show your material, hear yourself speaking clearly and confidently, and see the positive reactions of your teacher and classmates. The more you do this, the better your chances are of giving a great presentation.

Hana : So, the main point is to be specific and form very clear pictures in your mind?

Mr.Reed : Yes, that’s right. But you can’t stop there. Along with your visualization, you also have to actually start doing thins to work towards your goal. Goals and visualizations are meaningless without action. At each step in the process, you should perform a physical ac that will get you at least a little bit closer to your goal. If you keep going without giving up, no one will be able to stop you from achieving what you’ve set out to do. This process doesn’t seem too difficult, does it?

Hana : Not at all. You’ve given us some starting points for creating our own opportunities and ensuring success by following these techniques. Thank you for sharing this with us, Mr.Reed.
