Beyond the Limits

After competing in marathons for four years, Rick and Dick were ready for a new challenge. They decided to participate in a triathlon. Dick was not a very good swimmer and hadn’t ridden a bicycle since he was six years old. People told Dick that triathlon would be impossible for him and Rick and that he would be crazy to put his son through such an ordeal, but Rick and Dick were determined to make their “impossible” dream come true.

In the swimming part of the triathlon, Dick tried a cord around his waist and pulled Rick for 3.9 kilometers. Then he cycled 180 kilometers with his son riding behind him and finally pushed him in his wheelchair the entire 42.194 kilometers of the running portion of the race. All the competitors but one had already finished when Rick and Dick finally made it to the finish line, but the spectators all waited to see them finish and stood up to cheer for them.

Rick said, “I never could have done this without my father.” Dick told his son, “I never would have done it without you.” After that, the father-and-son team went on to participate in many competitions and eventually even ran and cycled 6,000 kilometers across the entire United States.

Beyond the Limits

1. After competing in marathons for four years,/ Rick and Dick were ready/ for a new challenge.

2. They decided/ to participate in a triathlon.

3. ① Dick was not a very good swimmer/ ② and/ ③ hadn’t ridden a bicycle/ ④ since he was six years old.

[Dick was not a very good swimmer], 두 번째 의미는 [Dick hadn’t ridden a bicycle since he was six years old]이다.

4. ① People told Dick/ ② that triathlon would be impossible for him and Rick/ ③ and/ ④ that he would be crazy/ ⑤ to put his son/ ⑥ through such an ordeal,/ ⑦ but/ ⑧ Rick and Dick were determined/ ⑨ to make their “impossible” dream come true.

▷ People told Dick that [triathlon would be impossible for him and Rick] and that [he would be crazy to put his son through such an ordeal], but Rick and Dick were determined to make their “impossible” dream come true. ► People told Dick that and that, but Rick and Dick were determined to do that

5. ① In the swimming part of the triathlon,/ ② Dick tied a cord/ ③ around his waist/ ④ and/ ⑤ pulled Rick/ ⑥ for 3.9 kilometers.

6. ① Then he cycled 180 kilometers/ ② with his son riding behind him/ ③ and/ ④ finally/ ⑤ pushed him in his wheelchair/ ⑥ the entire 42.194 kilometers/ ⑦ of the running portion of the race.

[with his son riding behind him] 뒤 부분의 riding behind him은 분사구로 앞의 his son을 설명하는 역할을 한다.

7. ① All the competitors/ ② but one/ ③ had already finished/ ④ when Rick and Dick finally made it to the finish line,/ ⑤ but/ ⑥ the spectators all waited/ ⑦ to see them finish/ ⑧ and/ ⑨ stood up/ ⑩ to cheer for them.

▷ [All the competitors but one] = [All the competitors except one]

▷ [see them finish] see가 시각을 나타내는 지각동사이기 때문에 뒤에 them이 하는 행동이 나오는 단어인 finish가 “원형부정사”로 사용되었다

8. Rick said, “I never could have done this without my father.” Dick told his son, “I never would have done it without you.”

▷ [could have +과거분사, would have +과거분사, should have +과거분사] 과거형 조동사 뒤에 완료형 동사가 사용되면 일어나지 않은 일을 의미한다.

9. ① After that, the father-and-son team went on/ ② to participate in/ ③ many competitions/ ④ and/ ⑤ eventually/ ⑥ even ran and cycled 6,000 kilometers/ ⑦ across the entire United States.
