Epilogue

A few years ago, Dick had a heart attack during a race. When he was examined by doctors, they discovered that the problem was in his major arteries. The doctors told him that if he hadn’t kept himself in such good condition through all the exercise he’d been doing, he would probably have died fifteen years before. Through all the training and competitions, Dick had not only brought joy to his son’s world but had also saved his own life.

Thanks to his father’s devotion, Rick had amazing experiences that took him beyond the limits of his body, and he also learned to feel that he was a valuable human being with something special to contribute to the world. In addition, Rick graduated from Boston University with a degree in special education and computer science in 1993.

Rick and Dick Hoyt went on to start the Hoyt Foundation, through which they participate in many benefit events to raise money for other disabled people. You can see them in the Boston Marathon every year.

Here are some statements that Rick has made using his computer.

Now over the age of 70 and 50, this father-son team is still running to meet ever greater challenges.
