<p101>

Skeeter has just returned home after finishing college. One day, she meets her friends and is shocked to hear her friends discussing their project, the *Home Help Sanitation Initiative.

“Sharing the toilet with colored people is very dangerous. They carry diseases. That’s why I’ve designed the Home Help Sanitation Initiative,” says Hilly.

“The Home... the what?” I ask her, hoping the maid serving us won’t hear our talk.

It’s a bill that requires every white home to have a separate bathroom for the colored help,“ she simply answers as if that should be taken for granted. I can’t believe my ears. Why can’t black maids use the family bathroom while they care for the children?

I make a face at her, saying, “Maybe we ought to just build your bathroom outside.”

<p102>

Skeeter decides to reveal the stories of these mistreated maids by writing a book. However, the problem is getting the maids to agree to speak with her. She asks Aibileen, who works for the family of one of her white friends, if she can interview her for the book.

I’m surprised to find Miss Skeeter staning in front of my house. It’s uncommon for white people to come to the black’s villages.

“Aibileen, could you tell me about what it is like to work as a maid in white households?”

“Miss Skeeter, doesn’t that sound dangerous to you?” I whisper.

“It’ll be fine if we’re careful,” she lowers her voice a little, but still not enough.

“Shhh, please. I’ll get fired if my boss finds out I talked behind her back.”

“We won’t tell her, or anyone. These will be private interviews.”

I stare at her, thinking she must be out of her mind, but she stands firm in her belief.

“Non one’s ever done this before. We’d be breaking new ground, by writing a book of the stories,” Miss Skeeter finally whispers in my ear.

<<Analyzing>>

<p101>

1. ① Skeeter/ ② has just returned home/ ③ after finishing college.

2. ① One day,/ ② she/ ③ meets her friends/ ④ and/ ⑤ is shocked to/ ⑥ hear her friends discussing their project,/ ⑦ the *Home Help Sanitation Initiative.

▽ One day,   ① she meets her friends

② she is shocked to hear her friends

③ her friends are discussing their project

④ the name of their project is the Home Help Sanitation Initiative

3. ① “Sharing the toilet/ ② with colored people/ ③ is very dangerous.

4. They carry diseases.

5. That’s why/ I’ve designed the Home Help Sanitation Initiative,”/ says Hilly.

6. “The Home... the what?”

▼ “The Home...

7. ① I ask her,/ ② hoping/ ③ the maid serving us/ ④ won’t hear our talk.

8. ① “It’s a bill/ ② that requires every white home to/ ③ have a separate bathroom/ ④ for the colored help,“/ ⑤ she simply answers/ ⑥ as if/ ⑦ that should be taken for granted.

▽ A require 명사B to 동사C = [A가, B가 C할 것을 요구하다]

▽ taken for granted [당연한 것으로 여겨지는, 인정된 것으로 여겨지는]

▽ It’s a bill  ① the bill requires every white home to have a separate bathroom

② the bathroom is for the colored help

9. I can’t believe my ears.

10. ① Why/ ② can’t black maids use/ ③ the family bathroom/ ④ while they care for the children?

11. I make a face at her,/ saying,/ “Maybe we ought to just build your bathroom outside.”

▽ make a face = [얼굴을 찌푸리다]

<p102>

12. ① Skeeter/ ② decides/ ③ to reveal the stories of these mistreated maids/ ④ by writing a book.

13. ① However,/ ② the problem/ ③ is getting the maids to agree/ ④ to speak with her.

▽ is getting the maids to agree, 진행형이라 헷갈릴 수 있으나, 동사 get이 사역의 의미로 사용된 구문이다. 즉, get A to B = [A에게 B할 것을 시키다, A를 B하도록 만들다]로 해석한다.

14. ① She asks Aibileen,/ ② who works for the family of one of her white friends,/ ③ if she can interview her/ ④ for the book.

15. ① “I’m surprised to/ ② find Miss Skeeter standing/ ③ in front of my house.

▽ I’m surprised that I find Miss Skeeter standing in front of my house.

16. It’s uncommon/ for white people to come to the black’s villages.“

이 문장을 굳이 that절로 바꾸어서, 그리고 해석되는 순서대로 바꾸어 본다면, “that white people come to the black’s villages is uncommon”이 될 것이다.

17. ① “Aibileen,/ ② could you tell me/ ③ about/ ④ what it is like/ ⑤ to work as a maid in white households?”

▽ It is like WHAT to work as a maid in white households. 또는 To work as a maid in white households is like WHAT.

18. “Miss Skeeter,/ doesn’t that sound dangerous/ to you?”/ I whisper.

19. ① “It’ll be fine/ ② if we’re careful,”/ ③ she/ ④ lowers her voice a little,/ ⑤ but/ ⑥ still not enough.

▽ [She lowers her voice a little] + [BUT] + [(She does) not (lowers her voice) enough] 또는 [(She lowers her voice) not enough]

20. ① “Shhh, please/ ② I’ll get fired/ ③ if my boss finds out/ ④ I talked behind her back.”

▽ 명사절을 이끄는 접속사 that이 finds out과 I 사이에 생략되어 있는 구문이다. [I talked behind her back]은 명사절이며, [내가 그녀의 등 뒤에서 이야기한 것]으로 해석한다.

21. “We won’t tell her, or anyone./ These will be private interviews.”

22. ① I stare at her,/ ② thinking/ ③ she must be out of her mind,/ ④ but/ ⑤ she stands firm in her belief.

23. “No one’s ever done this before.

24. We’d be breaking new ground,/ by writing a book of the stories,”

25. Miss Skeeter finally whispers in my ear.

▼ Skeeter
